Before “Stan” there was “the Fan”. 4 years prior to rapper Eminem dropping his critically acclaimed song about an obsessed fan, there was the 1996 film directed by Tony Scott. De Niro stars as Gil Renard, a down on his luck knife salesman, who takes on an unhealthy fixation with all-star San Francisco Giants center-fielder, Bobby Rayburn played by Wesley Snipes. Baseball, slumps, stalking and maniacal behavior round out the plot. Ellen Barkin, Benicio Del Toro and John Leguizamo also star in the movie. PIctured above is a still of the two actors (both New Yorkers). A related side note is that the San Francisco Giants were originally the New York Giants before the team relocated to the West in 1957. The Fan wasn’t a star in the cap of either actor, but makes a good Sunday afternoon Netflicks viewing.
