Earlier this month President BARACK OBAMA threw the traditional opening day pitch which marked the start of the Major League Baseball season for the Washington Nationals. This year also marked the 100th year of the Presidential pitching tradition. Walking out in a crowd of mixed applause and boos from Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals alike, Obama chose to pitch to Nationals third baseman RYAN ZIMMERMAN. As he settled on the mound in the DC hometeam Nationals fieldhouse jacket, the Commander in Chief shocked the crowd by pulling out his old faithful New Era 39Thirty Chicago White Sox cap; which needless to say quickly turned the whole stadium against him with a barrage of boos. The President then threw a wild pitch that veered to the left by which some miracle Zimmerman caught that in turn caused the crowd to roar with laughter and boos.
Despite what would appear to be a hostile crowd, it’s been tradition for the President to be met with distaste during the ceremonial pitch. In a review of all the records of Presidential pitches, President Grover Cleveland was the only President to not be booed. Obama would also be the 2nd President to throw out a pitch for the Nationals; previously before that was President George W. Bush. Obama’s choice to rock the Sox shouldn’t come as a surprise to many as he has been sighted at many White Sox games while he was an Illinois Senator and spotted wearing the same White Sox cap out in public.
