What’s up with the umpire brim?
The New Era 505 style is apparently all the rage in Japan but I just don’t get it? Maybe it’s a personal thing since the author of this post rocks a size 8 fitted. Maybe it’s because I’m American. Or maybe it’s because it looks stupid.
The short brim is made to go under an umpires face mask and as such doesn’t require a full brim unlike the players on the field. It’s a very practical for the purpose it was created for but, in my opinion looks quite silly when removed from the friendly confines of a baseball diamond.
I will admit that I’ve never actually worn one nor have I seen it in person so with that being said, maybe they are kind of nifty in real life as opposed to being displayed on a model with a mean face and wayward peacoat lapels…but my sartorial sensibilities say otherwise. The cap just looks unfinished to me. I can’t help but think that this cap is missing something.
