The Contrast Panel Baseball Cap Phenomenon

Mike Styczen featured writer of UNI WATCH has written a detailed article about The contrasting front panel cap phenomenon. This throwback style of fitted baseball caps isn’t half as popular now, but with “retro fever” in the air, I would not be surprised to see a return to the field soon. Styczen takes us back to the decades of the 70′s and 80′s (most likely before your time) and breaks down Major League Baseball’s American and National League teams that sported the style in different versions. Pictured above is a prime example, the Baltimore Orioles Authentic Cooperstown Collection Cap with 1983 World Series Logo patch. Check the full article at www.uni-watch.com

Vintage「1978 San Diego Padres」Fitted Baseball Cap

Filed under: History,NEW ERA 59Fifty — KJ at 11:00 pm on Friday, October 15, 2010

This picture is courtesy of athletics aesthetics stalwart Paul Lukas. At a recent Uni Watch gathering in Brooklyn one of the patrons happened to bring his authentic San Diego Padres New Era fitted cap. Looks like a “P30 Model” complete with full wool crown, DuPont visor, and “weatherizing” (whatever that means). A true collectors item if I’ve ever seen one. Click the image to see a bigger image.

UNIWATCH happens to be one of our favorite blogs for all things related to sports uniforms and design. They recently ran a post about an rare San Diego Padres baseball cap that was worn during the ’72 season. The twist is the wide-spanning Yellow panel on the front panels. Several readers from the era commented on the rare style, sparking a full on historical mystery. Hardcore Padres fan Robert Walker offered: “That cap was only used in ’72, only on Sundays, and (from what I have found) only for home games.” UNIWATCH is currently on a fact finding mission to confirm the statement. While you are waiting take a look a some classic images from a Padres 1972 program.

Once again HUNT AUCTIONS is offering up a museum worth piece of baseball history. Let’s turn the page back to the 1920′s, when the Giants were a New York based franchise. Player Roger Bresnahan was multi-talented athlete who played all nine positions on the field of dreams, including pitcher. He eventually moved to catcher and was ultimately labeled one of the best to ever play that position by managers John McGraw and Branch Rickey. Bresnahan’s was on the Giants’ roster from 1902-1908. After his playing career ended in 1916, he naturally transitioned into the role of coach and manager. Bresnahan returned to the New York Giants as a coach from 1925-28. The cap (pictured here) dates to that period. Produced by Spaulding, The White wool pinstriped cap features a Blue bill and classic embroidered interlocking NY on the front. The cap was a family heirloom, provided by the nephew of Roger Bresnahan and includes a Letter Of Authenticity from Hunt Auctions. Estimated Price: ($7,500.00-$10,000.00) Owie. Auction occurs March 6th & 7th, 2009.
