Vintage NEW ERA 59Fifty Fitted Baseball Cap Circa 1950

Filed under: NEW ERA 59Fifty,Vintage — Honcho at 4:00 am on Tuesday, March 1, 2011

Paul Carr has a taste for vintage baseball caps. Fortunately for us he’s also a fan of Strictly Fitteds. Here’s a rare piece of history that bridges the decades with a surprise twist. More words and images from the man himself.

“I thought you would be interested in seeing this New Era fitted cap from the early 1950s. Notice it has a much lower profile than today’s 5950s. As for what team it is, I have no clue. I have been told it was either a minor league team or a Cuban team. The A’s had a similar cap back then but the logo had a white outline, so that can be ruled out.”

Another vintage piece surfaces, this time from the archives of NEW ERA. The branding of the 59Fifty style, their flagship model has changed over the decades. This piece we estimate is from the early ’90′s. The 2 fold hang tag is a particular piece of interest. Labeled a “Pro Model” this cap is 100% wool and features “5950″ in flat embroidery on front. As found by Brian Procell. Interested parties should contact him at brianprocell [at] gmail.com

Here’s another gem we stumbled upon when visiting purveyors, CONSORTIUMS NYC. Sometimes those obscure off brands present the straight forward no-nonsense style that is necessary for your wardrobe. The Winter months call for something warmer. This vintage STERLING EDITIONS cap is the perfect blend of functionality and taste, combining a Green low profile wool crown, with a plaid brim. Granted if this was a medium, it would have quickly been folded into our collection. This size large is roughly between a 7-3/8 to 7-1/2. Available now online at www.consortiumsnewyork.com

UNI WATCH Uncovers A Major MLB Cap Discovery

Filed under: Trivia,Vintage — Honcho at 1:00 am on Thursday, January 20, 2011

UNI WATCH has uncovered a Major League Baseball piece of trivia. Among baseball history buffs it is commonly known that the A’s coaches and managers wore White caps during the Charlie Finley era. It comes up all the time, and it even figured prominently in a piece that appeared on Uni Watch six weeks ago. But the A’s players never wore White caps during Finley’s Green and Gold reign. Whether in Kansas City or in Oakland, players during the Finley era always wore Green caps – or did they? The shot above is from a 1967 A’s/Tigers game in Kansas City. The two A’s in the photo are pitcher Blue Moon Odom and first baseman Ray Webster. As you can see, they’re both White-hatted.

Now for those of you familiar with Vintage Deadstock and are saying “don’t they only do snapbacks?” I would say nay, you’re wrong, they’ve just been holding back. And for those of you NOT familiar with either brand…get learnt.
