Before they became known as the Yankees, the Bronx bombers were called the
New York Highlanders. The original franchise began after the Baltimore Orioles relocated to the Empire state in 1903. Pictured here is a NEW ERA Cooperstown Collection New York Highlanders 1903-1904 road edition fitted baseball cap. It’s clear to see how this graphic is an early incarnation of the now classic world recognized NY lock up logo used by the Yankees.
At the time the New York Giants (Who relocated to San Francisco in 19 ) were the established team representing the city. The Highlanders played at “The Hilltop”, which was one of the highest points on Manhattan. This was considered to be uphill from the majority of the Island, and above the Polo Grounds, the resident Giant’s home turf.
In addition the “Highlanders” was also a reference to the “Gordon’s Highlanders”. This was both a play on the name of the team President during 1903-1906, Joseph Gordon, and the noted British military unit called The Gordon Highlanders. *
