The NBA joined the NFL today in shutting down facilities so businessmen and legal eagles can step behind closed doors, argue, and make little progress for months before making a concerted effort to compromise on fine points in contract language that fans rarely speak.

Football has left us all tasting sour grapes. But the disappointment is now a deafening roar as the NBA joins in the lockout brutality against fans. Relentless disappointment. What was once merely a feeling has manifested into an entity wreaking havoc on our collective patience with games we voluntarily immerse ourselves in. It’s beyond frustration.

Apparently, NBA owners are suffering, worse than the NFL could imagine, and earning percentages must change for struggling franchises to become profitable. NFL owners argued similarly, with the crux of their position resting on the players’ salaries being too damn high.</Jimmy McMillan>

The NFL’s situation is vastly different from the NBA’s, though. While the gridiron gangs debate about how best to share the cup that runneth over, the guys on the hardwood are trying to figure out how best to fill theirs.

Here’s the thing, though: I don’t care. Not because the reasons behind the respective lockouts aren’t important or relevant; it’s because these governing bodies, vying for fan support of their causes, already dedicated themselves to detaching the spirit of the game from the harsh business aspects. They’ve requested, for years, that fans make the distinction and accept it.

People followed suit, and learned to expect winners, or competitive effort, before loyalty. Well, for the most part, because Cleveland is still really mad at LeBron James. But it was an unspoken agreement between fans and the sports they love, to accept expendable (but talented) players and pay premium prices for being fans, as long as teams made a legitimate effort to develop a contender.

When a star player leaves a team in free agency, fans are left with empty words reminding them, “Well, this game is a business, too.” As if that should ease the pain. It’s a lesson I learned as a kid when Shaquille O’Neal left Orlando for Los Angeles in the ’90s.

The same logic applied when a fan-favorite is released or traded in the offseason: It’s the business part of the game where no questions are allowed, and all points are quickly moot. Just move forward. The system was working until the leagues and players decided to tamper with the distractions and demand sympathy when no one was supposed to care.

Business is now the game, and no vague cliches disguise the fact that teams purposely ventured down dark roads that would inevitably end in lockout.

There aren’t many valid reasons, aside from recklessness in pursuit of that championship contender teams promised. It’s why we understand why one NBA team acquired three coveted, high-priced free agents at $100 million a piece in one summer. It’s why we didn’t flinch when an NFL team guaranteed $50 million to a player before he even practiced.

We’re not blaming the Miami Heat for venturing down that dark road, though. (But we can laugh at the Raiders.) We can’t, however, disregard the fact that such transactions, with lockouts looming, are the equivalent to accelerating on a dead-end street while fans serve as crash-test dummies.

It was never going to end well.

Miami operated within the rules of a loosely enforced salary cap and worked the structure to make their dreams happen. Isaiah Thomas tried the same in New York years ago, and that resulted in a blueprint for what not to do. So kudos to the Heat are in order.

The NBA has always been a star-driven league, but with 22 of 30 teams crying broke, it really doesn’t bode well for the game when teams are tripling up on franchise players. Teams aren’t drafting well, coaches are fitting square pegs in round holes, and fans are just waiting for the 82-game season to finish so the playoffs can show some real competition.

I don’t want to say that the only reasonable fix is a reduced regular season with fewer teams, but when poverty-stricken franchises can’t fill a stadium, they need look no further than the teams hoarding superstars.

The common trait all 10 of these guys have, is hip hop. Personalization and exlusivity has been a part of hip hop and then Spike Lee upped the game with his custom Yankees fitted. Now, not only did you have custom jewelry but you had custom fitted hats that didn’t look bootleg. And with everyone in the culture always trying to one-up each other’s steez, it was inevitable for heads to have insane fitted collections. It’s an endless loop, the more loot you have the more you can cop and vice versa.

Seeing as how I’m an artist myself, this is a personal list of celebrities/artist/musicians whose hat closets I would just love to cruise through. While they might not be relevant to some, one can’t help but acknowledge their visual or audio influence. Also that there’s some common ground between all of us, that commonality being creativity and fitted hats. The final five consists of: Travie McCoy, Yasumasa Yonehara, Taz Arnold, Lil Wayne & Chris Brown. I even threw an honorable mention list because the guilt was annoying me.

Travie McCoy
Travie McCoy is another lucky duck that got to drop a fitted with New Era, when he did the Gym Class Heroes collab. From the times I’ve seen him, he’s been in nice fitteds from the likes of Original Fake and this Commonwealth piece (a personal grail of mine). His taste in fitteds seems to have been dope before he blew up, so I’m guessing with the extra loot he’s got the collection looking niiiiicccceeeee.
Collection Guess: American streetwear/sneakerhead collection.

Yasumasa Yonehara
Yone, as he’s more commonly known, is a Japanese photographer you can kind of call the Terry Richardson of the east. While this dude is photographing girls voyeuristically with his polaroid, you can rest assured that his dome is nicely covered. The advantage Yone has over most on this list, is that he rocks mad Japanese brands that a lot of the other dudes just haven’t touched yet. So if I ever got to browse this dudes collection, a bonus for rummaging through his fitted collection is running into one of these nice polaroids. Holler.
Collection Guess: Mad Japanese streetwear and little known Japanese brands

Taz Arnold
Before becoming a stylist for Kanye, Taz was part of the group Sa-Ra. Not saying that he isn’t part of Sa-Ra anymore but it seems he’s deep into the fashion gig with Ti$a. Either way, before his style got wild, you could catch Taz rocking a nice fitted. Even doing a nice, and pricey, 59fifty collab with German luxury fashion brand MCM and Japanese high-end streetwear brand Phenomenon. Taz sets himself apart from the rest of the list because I’d picture his collection being more runway than street. Just a different perspective that would be refreshing to check out.
Collection Guess: High-end/runway to street. Always searching for inspiration.

Lil Wayne
Now that he’s out of jail, maybe Wayne could show me some of his hard to find pieces like the Freshjive “Don’t Tread on Me” fitted and others. You almost always seen Lil Wayne rocking a fitted whether it be in the videos, magazine covers or daily life, so you know he’s got a fully equipped arsenal… of fitteds. Ha, its a joke… cause he…you know… moving on. I know he used to rock an 8 because of his dreads but did he really cut them? If so, I want his old fitteds. Question though, Is it just me or would you febreeze the inside of them too? Just sayin.
Collection Guess: Stylist guided but streetwear and teams

Chris Brown
Now just because you got to do a collab with New Era, it doesn’t mean that it’ll come out dope. CBE showed us that. Otherwise, you could see him rocking nice fitteds from the likes of Leaders 1354 and Stussy. Something kinda tells me that his stylists laces him up but if he had time in between beating girls, I’d like to check out his collection.
Collection Guess: Stylist guided but streetwear and teams, as well

HONORABLE MENTIONS: Fabolous, Funkmaster Flex, Fat Joe, Kid Cudi & Wiz Khalifa
