US Patent Office Cancels Redskins trademarks
Newsflash. After much controversy and commentary surround the Washingon Redskins name and logo, a precedence has been made. The United States Patent Office has officially canceled the trademark of the Redskins franchise. The USPTO stated this choice was due to these marks being offensive to Native Americans. The decision was announced Wednesday. The office's Trademark Trial and Appeal Board ruled that "these registrations must be canceled because they were disparaging to Native Americans." This victory was lessened by the fact that the board lackes the authority to enforce the team from using these trademarks. Time will tell if the ownership will heed these words, and rebrand the team's name and image.
