Great style, should appear effortless. There is no trying and the margin of error is slim. While a complete lack of style is easy to spot, overdoing a look can be just as unflattering . We hammered in the point several times about not overmatching when it comes to color coordinating your wardrobe. Something that we have not talked about is color balance. Think of it as the equivalent of a balanced diet for your closet. Color can be a powerfully ally or an embarrassment. Unless you’ve decided to follow the Gospel of All Black Everything (Goths, Ninjas, Jay-z), dressing in completely in one color can leave you looking like Barney or worse.
Here is an example of how to “get ‘er done”, without jumping out the window. To start as a base for our outfit we have the Nike Air Copper Foamposites. A clear breakout winner in shoe releases for 2010, hordes hit the malls and the net looking for the perfect matching hat. The obvious route would be to got with a compimentary Copper and Black tee and matching fitted cap. Resist that urge, unless you want to look like a shiny new penny. That works for tweens and dead presidents. You? Not so much.
To support our argument we offer up this example. We are using one of our favorite fitted baseball caps of all time, the New York Giants 1913 season world tour. We’ve nicknamed it “The Shield of Shields”. This color way was styled by our resident cap colorist, CITY. Rather using Copper as the main color, it used only as an accent. The Bleached Wheat crown tones down the loud Metallic copper and creates a more balanced look when paired with the shoes. Too much of a good thing is anything but good.
Tying all the elements together is a Burgundy varsity Jacket by 10DEEP. The piece features elements of Bleached Wheat, Orange and Navy that link back to the embroidered details of the fitted. The result is a look that is both casual, natural and unique.
The daily challenge with developing personal style is to find that perfect balance. It is a bit of a contradiction; distinguish yourself from the crowd, yet be appropriate to the the surroundings. Granted wearing a baseball cap with basketball shoes is another contradiction, but that is now a time honored and accepted tradition in street fashion. A year later the demand of the Coppers and related color ways remain strong. Time will tell if it will become a true evergreen color story. For now those interested in this cap should seek out CITY on TWITTER for details.
